Microscopic chaos and macroscopic entropy in fluids

چکیده
In nonequilibrium thermodynamics macroscopic entropy creation plays an important role. Here we study, from various viewpoints, its relation with the phase space contraction, which has been recently proposed as an apparently alternative quantity.

Microscopic Chaos and Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics: From Quantum to Classical Dynamics
We review recent results on the relationships between the microscopic chaos in the motion of atoms or molecules in fluids and the transport properties sustained across these macroscopic systems. In the escape-rate formalism, the transport coefficients can be expressed in terms of the positive Lyapunov exponents, the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy per unit time or the Hausdorff dimension of a fractal ...
متن کاملChaos-induced resistivity in collisionless magnetic reconnection.
Magnetic null points act as scattering centers where particles describe chaotic orbits and the mixing effect increases the kinetic entropy. In an open system where convection of particles into/from the chaos region exists, the saturation of the entropy can be avoided, and continuous dissipation is achieved. The chaos-induced collisionless resistivity of ions enables fast magnetic reconnection. ...
متن کاملFrom Time-symmetric Microscopic Dynamics to Time-asymmetric Macroscopic Behavior: An Overview
Time-asymmetric behavior as embodied in the second law of thermodynamics is observed in individual macroscopic systems. It can be understood as arising naturally from time-symmetric microscopic laws when account is taken of a) the great disparity between microscopic and macroscopic scales, b) a low entropy state of the early universe, and c) the fact that what we observe is the behavior of syst...
متن کاملOn Some Pdf Based Moment Closure Approximations of Micro-macro Models for Viscoelastic Polymeric Fluids
In this paper we will discuss several issues related to the moment-closure approximation of multiscale models for viscoelastic polymeric fluids. These moment-closure approaches are based on special ansatz for the probability density function (PDF) in the finite extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell micro-macro models which consists of the coupled incompressible Navier-Stokes equations an...
متن کامل1 99 9 Microscopic chaos from Brownian motion ?
A recent Letter in Nature [1] presented empirical evidence for microscopic chaos on a molecular scale from an ingenious experiment on the position of a Brownian particle in a liquid. The Letter was preceded by a lead article [2] emphasising the fundamental nature of the experiment. In this note we demonstrate that virtually identical results can be obtained numerically using a manifestly micros...
